About Calyros

Calyros is an online, multiplayer role-playing game set a fantasy world inspired by Ancient Greek myths and monsters. Drawing from many inspirations, we're crafting a world that's both rich in story-telling and full of immersive experiences.

Not all heroes wear capes

In Calyros, heroism takes many forms. Miners, smiths, potion-makers and enchanters each help to shape the fate of the world. Their stories are as rich and deep as any warrior's.

Your choices matter

Drawing inspiration from table-top games like Dungeons & Dragons as well as digital games such as RuneScape, The Elder Scrolls and RimWorld, Calyros offers freedom in the face of challenges. Every decision brings unique risks, rewards and consequences.

Strength in every player

Whether you prefer a peaceful solo adventure or a collaborative adventure with friends, Calyros is built to embrace both. Forge your path alone or explore together.

FAQs

How can I play?

We currently have no public-access version of the game, but we periodically run semi-public BETA testing. If you'd like to be involved with that, please sign up to register for play testing. For updates on our progress, check out the Roadmap or join us on Discord.

What engine/tools are you using?

The client-side of the game is built using Godot - a free and open-source game engine that's pretty cool. The server-side uses a combination of Godot and a hand-built framework made with PHP.

When I do 2D art, I typically use either Aseprite or 3D models rendered in a viewport in Godot. When I do 3D art, I use Blender - but I'm absolutely terrible with it!

What platforms will be supported?

The game is being developed for mouse and keyboard users to begin with. Early testing indicates that we'll be able to support the following platforms:

  • Windows
  • MacOS
  • Debian & Arch based Linux distros

After that, we want to spend time adapting the controls to work with the Steam Deck (and other handheld devices). If this works well, we'll consider expanding support to include:

  • PlayStation
  • XBox
  • Switch

Can I help?

We're looking for help in several areas of the game on a task-by-task basis.

  • 3D modelling and rigging
  • UI design
  • Music and sound design

With that said, it's important for contributors to know that this game currently has a tiny budget and as such, we're not usually able to directly pay for work.

However, we're currently in the process of setting up a share scheme that'll award contributors with an ownership share of the game and a portion of future profits, if we make any.

How much will it cost?

No final decisions about price have been made yet but we'll likely structure the game into a two-tiered system; free and premium.

Premium players will pay a small monthly fee (something like $4 a month) to gain access to additional content.

Again, final decisions haven't been made but here some things I want to avoid at all costs - even if it means running the game is no longer viable.

  • Pay to win functional that provides an advantage to paying players
  • In-game currencies bought with real-world money (such as gems, diamonds or bonds)
  • Loot boxes, gacha or gambling mechanics
  • Cosmetics that break immersion or provide better-than-default overrides to normal items
